📖 Who Was Saint Jerome?

Saint Jerome (Eusebius Sophronius Hieronymus) was born around 347 AD in Stridon, a city on the border of Dalmatia and Pannonia (modern-day Croatia). He was one of the greatest scholars the Church has ever produced — a master of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, a theologian, a historian, and above all, a man consumed by love for the Sacred Scriptures.

He studied in Rome under the great grammarian Aelius Donatus, was baptized there, and later traveled to Antioch, the Egyptian desert, and Constantinople — always seeking deeper knowledge of Scripture and the spiritual life. He spent years as a hermit in the Syrian desert, learning Hebrew from a Jewish convert so he could read the Old Testament in its original tongue.

✝️ The Greatest Translation in History — The Latin Vulgate

In 382 AD, Pope Damasus I commissioned Saint Jerome to produce a reliable Latin translation of the entire Bible. Jerome accepted and spent over 20 years in Bethlehem — in a cave near the birthplace of Christ — translating the Sacred Scriptures directly from:

• 📜 Hebrew — for the Old Testament
• 📜 Greek — for the New Testament and Deuterocanonical books
• 📜 Latin — the universal language of the Church

The result was the Latin Vulgate — declared the official Bible of the Catholic Church by the Council of Trent (1546) and used for over 1,500 years as the foundation of Catholic theology, liturgy, catechesis, and Biblical Exegesis worldwide.

Without Saint Jerome, there is no Vulgate. Without the Vulgate, there is no unified Catholic Biblical tradition. He is the father of Biblical Exegesis.

Saint Jerome is the patron saint of translators, librarians, and Biblical scholars. His feast day is celebrated on September 30th. Monks, nuns, clergy, and seminarians around the world still study the Vulgate he produced — and the Biblical Exegesis tradition he founded continues in every monastery, seminary, and center of sacred learning.
